Key terms

Food group
A category of foods that share similar nutritional properties, such as carbohydrates or proteins
Balanced diet
Eating the right amount of each food group so the body gets everything it needs
Carbohydrates
Broken down into sugars that fuel the body's cells and muscles
Starch
A substance in starchy foods that is broken down into sugars for energy
Protein
Used for growth and to repair damaged tissue
Lipids
Fats used for energy, insulation, and building the membrane around every cell
Saturated fat
A less healthy type of fat, found in foods like butter and cake, linked to heart disease
Unsaturated fat
A healthier type of fat, found in foods like avocados and oily fish
Vitamin D
Keeps bones and teeth strong and supports a healthy immune system
Vitamin C
Keeps cells healthy and helps wounds heal
Iron
Used to make red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body
Calcium
Builds strong bones and teeth
Fibre
Adds bulk to food and keeps it moving through the gut
Water
Needed for chemical reactions in the body and to stay hydrated
