How to help your child with KS3 Biology and Geography, even if you haven't studied them since school.
What is KS3?
Key Stage 3 is the first three years of secondary school: Years 7, 8 and 9, for ages 11 to 14. It's where the science and geography your child will need for GCSE gets built.
In England there are no national exams in KS3. Schools set their own end-of-topic and end-of-year tests, so the best guide to what's coming up is your child's school.
Helping without nagging
- Ask them to teach it to you. "Go on, explain photosynthesis to me" works better than "have you revised?". If they can explain it simply, they know it.
- Little and often beats one long session. Ten minutes most days sticks far better than two hours the night before a test.
- Testing beats re-reading. Re-reading notes feels productive but doesn't stick. Quizzes and flashcards do.
- Praise the effort, not the score. "You kept going on the hard ones" builds the habit that gets the grades.
How your child can use this site
- Watch the lesson video for the topic they're doing at school.
- Play the unit games: each game has a level for every video, so playing is revising. Stars and scores are saved on your device only.
- Do the quick quiz under the video, and the free worksheet if they want more practice.
- Use My revision: Today's 5 brings back older topics, Fix my mistakes retries anything they got wrong, and the test planner turns a test date into a short daily to-do list.
- Check the curriculum map to see every KS3 unit in one place, with the school year it's usually taught in.
Is it safe?
- No accounts and no sign-up for students.
- Revision progress is saved on your child's own device only. Nothing about them is sent to me.
- Everything to learn is free: every video, quiz and free worksheet. Fuller worksheet packs are for sale in the shop, mainly for teachers and parents who want more practice.
- See the privacy page for the full details.
