- Gametes
- Sex cells that carry half the genetic information of a parent plant
- Stamen
- The male reproductive organ of a flower, consisting of the filament and the anther
- Anther
- The part of the male organ (stamen) that produces and stores pollen
- Filament
- The thin stalk that supports the anther

- The sticky part of the female reproductive organ that collects incoming pollen grains
- Style
- The stalk that holds the stigma up in position

- The base of the female reproductive structure that protects the ovules

What this lesson covers
How well do you know each one? Be honest: red means go back over it.
- Explain why plant reproduction matters and how producers support food chains
- Name the male parts of a flower and describe what each one does
- Name the female parts of a flower and describe what each one does
- Explain what gametes are and where they are found in a flower
- Describe pollination and explain how it differs from fertilisation
- Explain how the structure of a flower helps it attract pollinators
Test yourself
Cover the answer, say it out loud, then check the full quiz on the lesson page.
- In sexual reproduction in plants, how many parent plants are needed to produce a seed?
- Which part of the flower produces the male gametes?
- A student says the stigma produces pollen and the anther collects it. What has this student got wrong?
