Key terms
- Electricity
- Energy carried by tiny charged particles moving through wires
- Energy resource
- What electricity is made from, such as sunlight, wind or coal
- Renewable energy resource
- An energy resource that nature tops up quickly, so it won't run out
- Non-renewable energy resource
- An energy resource that took millions of years to form and can't be replaced quickly
- Photovoltaic panel
- A solar panel that turns light from the Sun straight into electricity, with no moving parts
- Turbine
- Blades spun round by wind, flowing water or steam, which drive a generator
- Hydroelectric power station
- A power station where flowing water spins the turbine
- Generator
- Driven by a spinning turbine, it makes the electricity
- National grid
- The network of cables and transformers that carries power to homes and buildings
- Fossil fuel
- Coal, oil or natural gas, formed from the remains of things that lived long ago
- Carbon dioxide
- A greenhouse gas released when fossil fuels are burned
- Greenhouse gas
- A gas that traps heat in the atmosphere and adds to global warming
- Uranium
- The fuel used in nuclear power stations, mined from the ground

- A score from 0 to 1 built from how long people live, education and income

What this lesson covers
How well do you know each one? Be honest: red means go back over it.
- Explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy resources
- Describe how solar panels, wind and flowing water are used to make electricity
- Outline how fossil fuels formed and how a coal power station makes electricity
- Explain why nuclear power is non-renewable but not a fossil fuel
- Compare energy use in more developed and less developed countries
- Describe how life changes for people with no electricity at home
Test yourself
Cover the answer, say it out loud, then check the full quiz on the lesson page.
- Photovoltaic solar panels turn which of these into electricity?
- Which of these is NOT a fossil fuel?
- About 4% of people live in the United States. What share of energy do they use?
